Whether she’s hunting down advisors for her little bro or planning a summer abroad Emily exemplifies the Scout Law’s principle of kindness in her life by consistently thinking of others before herself. When I first interviewed her she spoke of her plans to travel the world and discover new cultures. But she didn’t view these opportunities with a tourist’s mindset, instead she longed to understand the people, their customs and religion.  She has a free-living philosophy, open to anything and everything but what distinguishes her is her passion to spread happiness and aid wherever she goes. This summer she plans on traveling to Oaxaca in order to sponsor children in poor communities. I remember how she spoke of their humble lives with not judgment but with a sense of admiration for the courage and happiness they display despite the constant struggles they face. She not only wants to help people but she longs to learn from them and grow from her experiences with them. She smiles and lights up at the thought of the children and at the joy the smallest gift can bring them, and she wants to be the source of that happiness. Because of her kindness and caring acts for others Emily deserves this recognition. She is a constant reminder of the possibilities we all hold to bring kindness and change, however small into each other’s lives and wherever we may go in life.
